Corra Group Will Add Staff in Preparation for a Third Quarter Surge in Employment Screening

Corra Group is preparing for a robust fall season as HR managers return from vacation, and employers in general add to the impressive job growth statistics of the past two months. The El Segundo, California-based background checking service is adding to its staff in anticipation of an uptick in employment screening.

“We can gauge from our clients in what industry sectors we see appreciable job growth,” said Nick Gustavson, Corra Group Co-Founder. We see expanding employment in healthcare and in the energy industry as the country seeks to become energy independent. We also see hiring in the financial industry, in private equity and venture capital groups. Investors can’t just sit on their money and collect little or no interest. So, some are taking advantage of the economic recovery and buying companies or engaging in mergers and acquisitions.”

Gustavson noted Corra Group conducts a broad variety of background checks. He pointed out that the company is always sourcing new researchers to meet the need in relation to the increase of international hires.

“We conduct international criminal searches in just about every country,” said Gustavson. “We also conduct international education verification and international employment verification searches. We have been expanding our capability to conduct international civil and financial services in a great deal of countries. As each industrial sector becomes more demanding, we are constantly sourcing products for the global market. International background searches are a major necessity.”

Background Checks and Healthcare Workers

The Possible Danger of Indebted Government Workers

In order to work on the more sensitive government projects one must pass a background check.  Often, part of that background check consists of an employment credit check.  Workers who are in arrears for more than $5,000 are typically considered ineligible to work on the project.   Common belief is that is someone is indebted he is more susceptible to employee theft or corporate espionage.  The more sensitive the project the more likely that indebted contractor could be exposed to coercion or persuasion.

The Hill writes that about 83 thousand government workers who were cleared for security projects had an aggregate tax debt  of nearly three-Fourths of a billion dollars.  The figure listed i $730 Million.  Five thousand of these employees had liens against their houses.  I would imagine part of this debt is attributable to the economic downturn or Great Recession as it has come to be known.  More than a few homeowners are still underwater after their houses inflated in valuable then dropped dramatically.

According to the article…”
The GAO first recommended in 2013 mechanisms to improve federal agencies’ ability to detect delinquent federal tax debts by those eligible for security clearances.

However, statutory privacy protections limited access to this information, the GAO said. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) had formed an interagency working group to explore creating an automated process similar to what the Treasury Department uses.

In June, the ODNI’s working group said due to the legal and logistical challenges of obtaining tax compliance information from Treasury, it was exploring other sources of information.”

In the Trucking Industry, Good Drivers are Hard to Find

Stock shares in Swift Transportation declined the other day on the news one of the largest trucking firms in the country was having difficulty finding drivers.  We at Corra Group hear this from a number of our trucking clients.  Good help is hard to find.   Since we service the trucking industry and offer Motor Vehicle Driving Records and other background checks that service the employment screening needs of the trucking industry, we hear the recovery  in the economy has exacerbated the problem.  Good help is hard to find.

According to the article in Yahoo Finance….The American Trucking Association has warned the country is short 30,000 drivers, and that the gap could climb to 200,000 in the next decade.”

This is a significant concern for those especially who are shipping their products across the country.  Corra Group has seen a number of startup companies that conduct our employment screening trucking packages.   Where it is initially a family operation and then expands as the enterprise becomes more successful.   It is difficult to say at this point whether the starts will be the answer to the shortage of drivers, but maybe part of the solution is not with the larger companies.   Typically, where there is demand in the market, there is ultimately supply.
