orra Group is advising its clients about a notable increase in fraudulent education verification claims. The background checking service believes candidate education verification warrants greater scrutiny as the number of false education claims have increased appreciably.
“We have noticed an uptick in bogus claims, concerning college degrees,” said Corra Group Co-Founder Nick Gustavson. “The economy is still slow and the job market is still pretty tight. Job candidates are using any advantage they can to get a leg up on the competition. With employment history, they embellish. It’s education where they mostly fabricate. Take former CEO of Yahoo, Scott Thompson. He is one of the more sensational examples of people claiming degrees they never obtained.”
Because so many American employers are hiring job candidates who were educated abroad, Corra Group advises recruiters and human resources managers to practice vigilance with international education verification. Some candidates claim graduation when they only attended for a limited time and never obtained a degree. And some claim graduation, but never set foot on the campus.
