FBI Does Record Number of Gun Background Checks

I don’t know if it is the lousy economy or a sign of the times, but more people are buying guns and gold.   The FBI is conducting a record number of background checks as consumers wait in line to buy their firearms.  The FBI has process some 4.25 million background checks.  That’s a lot of people and a lot of weapons.

According to Eric Fry in an article in The Daily Reckoning,  even after the steep sell off in metals, people are back to buying gold.  Meanwhile, in this economic downturn gun purchases are in stark contrast to consumer buying of just about everything else.  The article maintains, that major retailers are finding their  “core shoppers” are “running out of money much faster than a year ago.”   As many core shoppers live paycheck to paycheck, they typically do most of their shopping at the beginning of the month.  Come the end of the month, they are out of bucks and purchases drop off dramatically.   It’s a big deal to the retailers.

But guns are another matter.   Enough so that the giant retailer Wal-Mart may rescind its five year mandate on not selling firearms and ammunition and get back in on the gun frenzy.  Background checks or not, around fifteen million persons will go shopping for a gun this year.

Investors, meanwhile, will be buying up silver and gold.  They are buying up commodities and exchanging their dollars for other currencies.   You don’t need background checks to purchase silver and gold.  But you do need to believe the economy, or its recovery, ain’t all it’s cracked out to be.     Buying commodities is regarded as the prudent movie when the economy is unstable.  So say some.  Others meanwhile are betting on the turnaround.  Is the sky really falling, or is recovery just ahead.  Take your choice.  And spend your money accordingly.
