TSA Worker Had Prior Record on His Background Check

You would think the  controversy concerning TSA and the passenger screening process drew enough bad publicity.  But now it appears  a TSA Security Employee SA security worker accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a woman had previously been convicted of misdemeanor.  the accused security worker was accused of nine counts of stalking and harassment by communication.  According to an article  on the Atlanta Channel 2 website, a court clerk told the reporter the TSA employee pleaded guilty and spent three months in jail for skipping a court appearance.

Apparently background checks with stalking and harassment is not a strong consideration for TSA.     It’s employment screening program cites a  considerable list of  offenses that would bet a job applicant disqualified from being hired at TSA.   Background checks resulting in such past indiscretions  as felonies, violent crimes, theft, and crimes involving security and transportation would prevent a candidate from being hired.     But misdemeanor offenses, including harassing and stalking.

The fact that stalking is not an issue for exclusion strikes me as pretty odd as the Transportation Security Agency or TSA is now having its security personnel conduct body searches and pat downs of airline passengers.   You would think at such a sensitive time when there is so much rancor about the intensified passenger screenings that you wouldn’t deem it fit to hire someone with harassment and stalking as part of his background.   Whether it is a felony or misdemeanor, this is an employee who demonstrates a problem with civil restraint.   Also, you would think in this economy there would be personnel TSA could hire who didn’t have previous criminal records.

Just a thought, but by hiring job applicants with no previous criminal records it would go a long way to restoring integrity to TSA, its personnel and what some believe to be its overzealous processes.
