This is guns and butter. And now there is the issue of guns and religion. Or at least guns and church groups. These are the church groups from Anchored in Peace who are urging the Ohio State Legislature to mandate background checks for gun buyers at gun shows.
According to the Dayton Daily News, the group is holding a press conference where it will declare its support for background checks for people purchasing firearms at gun shows. This is a local group of churches, mostly from Northwestern Dayton, Ohio. The legislation in question that would require background checks is House Resolution 2324, which is the Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2009.
Gun Show Criminal Background Checks is a hot button issue. I have written about it several times. My latest blog entry on the subject was Bloomberg and Company Pushing for Background Checks. This is where New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as other mayors are calling for background checks, based on their undercover efforts that revealed that even buyers who would not normally eligible were being sold weapons at gun shows.
This is not an issue I expect to see going away anytime soon. Other states will certainly have their say whether to mandate criminal background checks at gun shows or not. We shall see what the Ohio State Legislature decides.
