Without Background Checks, Your Business Can Be Vulnerable

Professional Background Screening a Small Price to Pay

The candidate for chief financial officer at a fast-growing computer hardware company was forthright about his own money troubles.

He had resigned his previous position to care for his wife, who had been badly injured in a car crash, he told his interviewers, and after the insurance company refused to pay her medical bills, he had no choice but to declare bankruptcy.

As a background checking service, we at Corra will hear our clients exclaim in surprise, “But he seemed like such a nice guy.” This is after learning their number one candidate had a criminal record, was a sexual offender, had left a ton of bad debt, or had a driving record that was not to be believed. Apparently, they didn’t believe it. Hence the exclamation and surprise.

We hear the surprise enough to know that part of the MO, modus operandi to the less initiated, is to come off like nice guys whom you can trust and rely on. The embezzler in the article is but one of the many fine examples of assorted miscreants roaming this earth who can cause your business plenty of damage. I know this is self serving, but why for the few bucks it costs you wouldn’t run a background check on all your employment candidates is beyond me. In fact, I would be running periodic update background checks on my employees. There are no guarantees, but the background check can help eliminate a lot of rude awakenings.

This embezzler in the article made off with $3 million in just one place, not counting the money he had stolen from previous employers. Ouch. But just think of the petty thieves and what they steal from your office. And think of the person who can steal your valuable databases or proprietary information. This is all dangerous stuff.

So check them out before you hire. Call Corra.
